Old Rag II
For those who want to know, it turns out our last Shenandoah hike... was the short-cut to the summit.
Ouch.

Translation: The male giant panda is eager, Stevens said, but has "alignment" problems; the female cries out to him loudly and displays other come-hither behavior, but then lies flat on her stomach.
Buuunnnnnny: Come on people, I could impregnate a panda better than THIS! |

| Weekend |
[Jun. 1st, 2004|03:41 pm] |
The busiest slow weekend ever:
- Friday: Poker at Josh and Barry's: (Won 25. Lost 10. Netted 15.) Favorite hand: LL facing elimination went all in on QQ against my A5. To her chagrin, I flopped an Ace. (Busted!) Then she flopped not one, but two Queens. Bummer. Fantastic BBQ chicken Pizza. Finished at 2:00 AM. That's a lot of poker.
- Sat: Bought tennis shoes (finally). Lazily looked for bike to rent. Didn't rent. Bought two CDs (Strokes and Clash) and two DVDs (12 monkeys, and umm I forget!) at used record store near Clarendon. Thought: Do they ever switch out the used record store clerks? They looked straight out of every single movie with a used record store ever. Watched about 3 hours of Six Feet Under. Went to Four Courts by myself for dinner at the bar. Ate Grilled Chicken sandwich. Ended up chatting with guy (John) who was in town for Rolling Thunder for a couple hours (!). He's traveled a lot. Won a silver star (and other things medals). Lives in Fla. and is retired. He doesn't really talk much with his (very successful) son, but does talk to his daughter. Went to CSU. Going to travel to Israel and like 15 other countries next year. Is an amateur nature videographer and has shot stuff for National Geographic. Was supposed to get call from Cari, but it never came :(. Thankfully really interesting evening anyway.
- Sunday: Woke up late. Watched more Six Feet Under. Cleaned the room a little. Played tennis with Eli. We split two sets (6-4, 1-6). Was supposed to go out with LL and friends, but it fell through. Ended up playing more poker with Eli. Lost $23 ( :/ ), but gained back $10 in a follow up tournament. Ended at 2 AM eagerly
- Monday: Wake up, check IM. Supposed to go hiking, but called off for rain. Went for a short run eventually moved to treadmill. Eventual decision, egg and cheese bagel with LL at Chesapeake Bagels in Courthouse. Board games and snacks at SR new apartment. I was on winning Taboo team (managed to hold my own) and winning Cranium team (World ends!). Late breaking decision to walk to G-town for Shrek 2 (rated B+ for parts of hilarity, brought down by cheesy music and lack of cohesion).

The Daily Show, 5/11/04:
Jon Stewart: Stephen, what do you think about this idea that we are hearing from Rumsfeld, and now Sen. Inhofe, that the press was somehow irresponsible for releasing these photos of abuse?
Stephen Colbert: Jon, I agree entirely with Secy Rumsfeld that the release of these photos was deplorable, but these actions of a few rogue journalists do not represent the vast majority of the American media.
Stewart: The journalists did something wrong?
Colbert: I'm just saying those journalists don't represent the journalists I know. The journalists I know love America, but now all anybody wants to talk about is the bad journalists--the journalists that hurt America.
But what they don't talk about is all the amazingly damaging things we haven't reported on. Who didn't uncover the flaws in our pre-war intelligence? Who gave a free pass on the Saddam-al Queda connection? Who dropped Aghanistan from the headlines at the first whiff of this Iraqi snipehunt? The United States press corps, that's who. Heck, we didn't even put this story on the front page. We tried to bury it on "60 Minutes II." Who's on that--Charlie Rose and Anglela Lansbury?
Stewart: Stephen, what do you think is at play here?
Colbert: Politics, Jon, that's what. Pure and simple. I think it's pretty suspicious that these tortures took place during a Presidential campaign. This is a clear cut case of partisan sadism. You know, come to think of it, I'm pretty sure those Iraqi prisoners want Bush out of office too. You know I wouldn't be a bit surprised if a pile of hooded, naked Iraqis has a job waiting for them in the Kerry Administration. |

| Eight hundred thousand plus? |
[Apr. 26th, 2004|11:53 am] |
How was I supposed to know The March for Women's Lives was going to be big? Don't they know "event" marches have to put "million" in the title?
I think I've totally lost my perspective. I've of course known about this weekend's march for about a month: I saw an advertisement on the "T" in Boston, other friends mentioned it, I even went on a couple of dates with a girl helping to organize it, but I completely missed that it was going to be "event" big.
Oops.

As an aside, I'm always amazed that Washington pulls these things off so well. The city is not exactly renowned for it's management capabilities, but more people than the official population of the city just wandered around 2-3 miles from my house and I barely noticed. Post.com has a video. |
